Ray, I think we misunderstood your problem. Let me explain how we see your problem. Your setup: 12 queue instances with 16 slots each. You are submitting a bunch of jobs. eg. 100, which will overload the hosts massively But you guess that 2-3 jobs per hosts are possible without overloading.
Contains a comma separated list of PEs (see sge_pe(5)). This parameter filters for jobs requesting a pe in the list. Any PE not in the list will not be considered for the resource quota rule. If no pe filter is specified, all pe and jobs with no requested pe matches the rule. The value '*' means all jobs with requested pe. I am running SGE 6.2u5. The PE is attached to various queues. The PE has sufficient slots, and the variuos exec nodes are sufficiently idle to take a trivial 4 slot job. The PE definition: $ qconf -sp make-dedicated pe_name make-dedicated slots 5000 user_lists NONE xuser_lists NONE start_proc_args /bin/true The current SGE uses a more accurate value if possible (see execd_params USE_SMAPS). Also, if a job maps large files into memory (see mmap(2)), that may cause it to fail due to the rlimit, since that counts the memory mapped data, at least under Linux. A future version of SGE is expected to provide control over using the rlimit. Sun Grid Engine Quick-Start¶ The following sections give an overview of how to submit jobs, monitor job and host status, and how to use the SGE parallel environment. Submitting Jobs¶ A job in SGE represents a task to be performed on a node in the cluster and contains the command line used to start the task.

We have 2 types of machines in two different ques on the same cluster running SGE 6.2u5. 1 has 32 cpu while the other has 8. We run a lot of threaded processes so use the default npcu pe quite a bit. The issue is that we were able to fit 2x16 ncpu jobs onto the 32 slot nodes but I cannot fit 2x4 ncpu jobs onto the 8 slot nodes. Each queue is associated with a number of slots: one computational process runs in each slot; each compute node in the HPC cluster provides one or more slots. Parallel Environments For most parallel jobs, including those using OpenMP and MPI (e.g., OpenMPI or MPICH), and parallel programs such as Fluent and Star-CD, an SGE Parallel Environment Each PE could be configured to fill the slots available on the cluster nodes in a specific way. One requests a specific PE with the -pe pe_name num_slots parameter and then SGE tries to find num_slots slots following the allocation policy of the pe_name PE. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to request slots in integer multiples per node. Contains a comma separated list of PEs (see sge_pe(5)). This parameter filters for jobs requesting a pe in the list. Any PE not in the list will not be considered for the resource quota rule.
